THE RSPCA’s  longest-serving resident, a 15-year-old cat called Ernest, has been saved from having an eye operation after a vet put contact lenses in his eyes.
Ernest has lived at the animal home in Godshill for 13 years but developed a serious eye condition, causing him irritation that severely hindered his sight.

Carers were reluctant to put him through an operation because of his age, until Jonathan Wood, a veterinary surgeon at Green and Foster, suggested using the lenses to help him.
Ernest has been wearing them for four weeks and although it is still a trial period, he has proved a most tolerant cat.
The lenses, known as bandage lenses, were ordered especially for Ernest to ensure they fitted properly. They cost around £25 and stay in Ernest’s eyes for up to three weeks, before they are cleaned and put back in by the carers.
Earnest arrived at the RSPCA after he was hurt in a road accident. Nobody has come forward to take him as a pet and he has stayed at the RSPCA where he adorns the reception area.
“Since he has been wearing the lenses, it’s noticeable how much more he looks for his food,” said Jessica Ball, wildlife carer at the RSPCA.
